The Influence of Solar Eclipses on Ancient Cultures:

-

Solar eclipses have been a source of interest to mankind right from the earliest civilizations that were in existence. These phenomena that occurred when the Moon eclipses the Sun have always been associated with powerful omens regarding mythology, prophecies, and historical events. This paper aims to discuss how solar eclipses affected the society and civilizations of the ancients in the way they behaved and what they believed in.

Solar Eclipses in Mythology

People from many ancient civilizations considered solar eclipses to be evil omens or acts of gods. For instance, in ancient Mesopotamia eclipses were associated with important events or calamities. “The Babylonians were very precise in their documentation and explanation of the eclipses which they considered as messages given by the gods. ” For their part, the Babylonians made fairly precise records of the lunar phases and eclipses and a foundation for their intricate system of predicting and interpreting eclipses could be deduced from the so-called “Astrological Diaries. ”

The same was the views of the ancient Chinese who considered the solar eclipses the signs of the Gods’ anger toward the current emperor. In Chinese culture, the forecast of eclipses was very advanced, and if these calculations were wrong some way had to be found to give the new ruler a bad omen for his reign. An eclipse could make the emperor perform certain activities that would help him regain the favor of the gods, which he may have lost due to his misdemeanors so that he does not trigger disasters in society.

Ancient people especially people in Greece, believed that solar eclipses were a result of the anger of gods.

Prophecy and Solar Eclipses

In the past, solar eclipses tended to be associated with prophecies and forecasts in cultures of the time. The ancient Egyptians attributed eclipses to two gods, namely; Ra and Horus. The interruption of the light because of an eclipse could be interpreted as a fight of the god Ra against the principle of chaos. Egyptian priests, or people who were in charge of such practices, would regard these events as omens of some kind connected to the gods’ blessing or curse upon a particular event.

Even in ancient Greek civilization, the eclipses were considered to have significance in respect to some Oracles. The Pythia, the Oracle of Delphi, would often look at eclipses as signs or symbols or any divine communication. The Greeks tended to think that such heavenly signs could predict significant events or shifts in political power. For instance, one of the earliest recorded eclipses was the eclipse of 2 May, 332 BCE which was viewed as an omen concerning the warfare of Alexander the Great.

Prehispanic civilizations

One of the best-informed prehispanic civilizations was the Mayan one who also included eclipses in their divinatory activities. The Maya were able to calculate in advance not only the solar eclipses but also included the results of the calculations of these phenomena in their calendrical and cult practices. They believed that eclipses were potent periods within which religious rituals could be carried out in order to restore the world back to its correct state/pleasure by the gods.

Historical Events and Solar Eclipses

In this part, we will discuss the history and the facts regarding the occurrence of solar eclipses.

Solar eclipses have been central activities in defining certain social-historical characteristics. The eclipse of 28 May 585 BCE, is perhaps the most well-known of all and was predicted by Thales of Miletus. This kind of eclipse happened during the fighting between the Medes and the Lydians, consequently, the fighting was stopped because of the light’s sudden disappearance. This eclipse was predicted accurately by Thales and this impressed the Greeks in the way they began to understand the phenomenon in the heavens but more to the point it had political consequences immediately.

In ancient Chinese civilization, the records of the solar eclipse were tied to the dynastic changes that always occurred frequently. For instance, the total solar eclipse that occurred on 21/01/1900 BCE as noted in the ‘Book of Documents’ was attributed to the demise of Xia dynastical rule followed by the inception of the Shang dynasty. Such records were employed in explaining political shifts and asserting the necessity of these shifts to the public.
